J.A. Miara Transportation was contracted to work at a university to move an Adirondack rock on their campus. The large rock, weighing 16,000 pounds, was donated to the university to be placed on display. Due to the weight of the rock and where it had to be moved to, Miara riggers were presented with a few challenges. Typically, a crane would be utilized for a job of this nature, however, an alternate course of action had to be taken due to circumstances regarding the location of final placement. The rock was to be placed outside of a university building surrounded by a freshly poured concrete sidewalk, located on a main street, dense with both pedestrian and automobile traffic. In addition to this, electrical wires above the sidewalk had to be avoided in order to safely place the rock. Therefore, a crane could not be used given the proximity of electrical wires to the object being lifted and the risk that that posed. Additionally, the curbs height and freshly poured concrete of the sidewalk prevented a forklift from driving the rock directly to its destination. Miara crafted a solution. It was decided that the use of a super jib would complete the job as it would clear all of the present obstacles. When attached to a forklift, a super jib extends the horizontal reach of a forklift and can lift objects from above as opposed to from below. Due to the super jibs ability to extend further forward while simultaneously supporting the rock, both the electrical wires above and sidewalk below could be cleared safely. Given the proper planning by our team and the added capabilities of Miara’s custom super jib, the Adirondack rock was safely placed at the desired location, satisfying both the client and company.
