Installing fuel cell at university
Installing fuel cell at university

J.A. Miara was hired to rig and install a large fuel cell that was to be used to power the Connecticut College Campus. The manufacturer of the fuel cells was at a loss as to where a crane could be set up to hoist the fuel cell and ancillary equipment into the area designated for the fuel cell. The college had decided on a wooded hilly area to conceal the fuel cell from pedestrian view, which led to a series of challenges. The obvious solution was setting up a large crane on a busy main road and hoisting the equipment into the area, but that option came with tremendous cost for a crane that size, as well as road closures and approval from utility companies. J.A. Miara came up with a solution to use one of their specialized forklifts to bring the fuel cell equipment, which included a large transformer, down a steep dirt path leading to the install site. The equipment was then set close to J.A. Miara’s 65-ton all-terrain crane that was able to be set up inside the actual site area which then hoisted the equipment into its final location. Both the college staff and manufacturer of the fuel cell were very pleased that the install was completed successfully with minimal interruption to the activities at the college.
