J.A. Miara was hired to complete a rigging project at Twin Rivers Technologies in Quincy, MA for a project that was seen as impossible by other rigging companies. The company had purchased a large VOC abatement system for their manufacturing facility that needed to be rigged into an opening on the fifth floor of the building, assembled in four parts, rotated 90 degrees and rigged into its final position onto a concrete pad weighing over 50,000lbs when assembled. Because of the location on the fifth floor there was no way for forklifts or heavy rigging equipment to be utilized for the installation, this required outside of the box thinking from the foreman to utilize only rigging equipment that could be carried by hand into the installation area. The working environment was full of extremely dangerous chemical processing pipelines meaning that any miscalculation during critical lifts and rigging could be catastrophic. The fifth floor opening access was also blocked by piping and process equipment, requiring a 600 ton crane with a luffing jib to hoist the sections over all of the obstructions leading up to the fifth floor opening. There was absolutely no room for error and pre-lift planning was critical to ensure that the equipment was rigged in one shot and not brought back down for re-adjustments. This project was the ultimate example of, ‘measure twice, cut once,’ in which even the slightest miscalculation could have resulted in costly consequences. J.A. Miara’s experienced foreman and rigging crew safely completed the installation with zero re-rigs from the crane and without incident. J.A. Miara once again cemented its name in the industry as the go-to choice when projects seem impossible.
